A Ketamine infusion IV drip has a slower onset and lasts longer. IV drip occurs over a 30-40 minute period. The fastest onset is usually within five minutes.
Anecdotal evidence suggests the longer the medication is in a patient's system the higher the likelihood of nausea.
The other benefit of the IV drip is that if patient's are going to react negatively to the medication with can stop it immediately. Versus the IM is administered all at one time and we have no ability to extract the medication out once it's been administered.
